In 1953 the United States Air Force begin the Project Silver Bug, which was the American “black project” version of the Canadian Y-2 Avro Aircraft. Project Silver Bug was a code name that was given to a prototype of disk-shaped aircraft built in Malton, Ontario, Canada for the US military by Avro Aircraft Ltd.

Project Silverbug

Avro Aircraft Canada Y-2/ Private Venture 704 project that was revealed to the United States Air Force in 1955 had its successor in the American “black project” version called Project Silver Bug.

Canadian John Frost, who was interested in Nazi Saucer programs and was quite amazed by them, began the Project Y-2. It involved a very radical "radial flow jet" engine design. In US Patent # 4,193,568 we can see this 1955 design, which people began copyrighting as very similar ideas as late as 1976. This aircraft was mentioned as being able to hover at up to 18,000 ft. without using afterburners and capable of Mach 3 and over 80,000 feet.

In the mid 50's a cover story for the Y-2/Silver Bug program was leaked to "Look" magazine which misinformed its readers regarding the engine (substituting many small conventional jets for the single radial flow) and the systems of control of the saucer.

Avro Canada was contracted later in 1958 to build a small ground-cushion vehicle for the USAF and US Army similar to the "Look" magazine item. Many are convinced that "Avrocar" was constructed only for disinformation purposes so it could be possible to tell those who saw "flying saucers" that it was only unsuccessful Avrocar aircraft. In the meantime, Y-2 went "Black" and had continuous development.

The Y-2 project, later renamed to Silver Bug, was an entirely other matter. It is clear that this item did go Black and the incredible performances projected by educated engineers are enough to understand why it has been such a kept secret. The Saucer shape give natural stealth to the aircraft and the radial flow engine is capable of producing incredible thrust in such an aerodynamically appealing shape. The vertical take off and landing (VTOL) abilities allowed the US Army the possibility of building underground bases. This advanced technology and its features ensured winning in the possible escalating of the Cold War in the 1950's. Until they developed technology that could be expected to counter "stealth", they didn't want the Soviets to suspect or even possess any of this technology.

5.4 million dollars spent on Avro's own "Private Venture 704" including about 2 million dollars from the USA up to 1957 is one of the strongest evidences that Avro continued developing Y-2. Only 4 million dollars was spent on the Avrocar project, which was commenced after this time. Avro reported themselves that the first step needed in responding challenge of developing the Y-2 was to build the control duct system and the engine. This makes it clear where the first $5.4 millions went. The Avrocar could be a great way to mask their real intentions.

The Avrocar project used a much lower flying and slower design and much less sophisticated technology. It was used as a "proof" that the concept of the flying saucer design was not feasible.

The first prototype test flights showed that it was unstable, underpowered, and could not make successful straight forward flight. Films from testing recently found show they solved the problem of stability.

According to the testimony on the record, they also finished doing required modifications which allowed the craft to transit to forward flight and the expected 300 mph. At that moment the project was terminated with all tooling, drawings, and flying examples moved to the United States. The Avrocar examples in the Smithsonian and at Wright Patterson are not the final version of the aircraft, but early development models that were very far from successful. Future projects data is almost impossible hard to find.
